Pixel detector Medipix MX-10

<b style="color: red;">THE PROJECT IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ONLY IN RUSSIAN.</b><br>This project is an online version of the UC Engineering Training Lab with the same name and focuses on the advanced technology of pixel detectors. Medipix is the family of detectors working like a camera, registering each individual particle hitting the pixel matrix. This allows obtaining high-resolution, high-contrast and low-noise images. Instead of working with a real detector (as in offline version), sets of already measured data will be provided.

Tasks

1. Study of the basics of ionizing radiation
2. Study of the detector types, the Medipix MX-10 detector, and the Pixelman software
3. Study of the used radiation sources and concept of the particle beam collimation
4. Experiments with the alpha-particle propagation through air: mechanism understanding, concept of average range, its calculation
5. Experiments with the alpha-particle propagation through polyethylene and aluminum
6. Experiments with gamma radiation from Am-241 source: understanding of the mechanism of gamma ray registration by the detector, concept of interaction cross-section. Gamma radiation applications (radiography, X-ray fluorescence analysis)
7. Experiments with the natural background radiation

Required skills

- Good Russian
- Knowledge of school mathematics and physics
- Basics of computer knowledge, plotting charts in MS Excel or Origin (desirable)

Acquired skills and experience

You will learn how to work with a pixel detector, set the measurement parameters, and evaluate your own measurements. The basic types of radiation of several emitters will be distinguished according to the measured tracks. Ability to build simple experiments for the examination of the properties of radioactivity will be acquired.
